Land Rover Model Series Origins

The designs for the Land Rover model series were conceived in 1947 by Rover Company chairman, Maurice Wilks. Wilks and his brother Spencer tinkered with the model concept on his farm in Wales. The design that emerged from their backyard featured:

  • An axle and chassis lifted from Jeep.
  • An Army Green paint job, in part due to the surplus of military auto paint after WW2.

The model was officially unveiled and released at the Amsterdam Motor Show on April 30, 1948.
