What Happens If You Don't Change Your Oil?

mechanic checking car oil level with dip stick

Between tire rotations and battery checks, it can be difficult to keep track of routine maintenance needs in Clearwater. So, what happens if you don’t change your oil? You might be surprised to hear that this inexpensive service can have a huge impact on your car’s performance and safety. Motor oil is responsible for lubricating the moving parts to reduce friction and heat, but even the highest quality oil doesn’t last forever. As oil ages, it gets thicker and less effective – which puts your engine in jeopardy. Find out what happens if you don’t get your oil changed, and start thinking about your next service at Land Rover Tampa!

What is the Purpose of Motor Oil?

Before we tackle what happens if you don’t get your oil changed, let’s dive a little deeper into the purpose of motor oil. The motor oil acts as the primary lubricant inside your engine. It performs a variety of functions:

  • Motor oil reduces friction between moving parts, which decreases wear and tear.
  • The dispersants in the oil help to clean debris from the engine.
  • Detergents in the oil clean varnish from the engine.
  • Motor oil can neutralize acids to keep your engine components from breaking down.

How Often Do I Need an Oil Change?

While you may have heard that vehicles in the past needed oil changes performed every 3,000 miles, but modern automotive technology has extended that interval, and now most Wesley Chapel drivers can go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil change services. But, this depends on your driving habits. If you often drive long distances, do a lot of off-roading, or tow heavy cargo, then you may need to schedule your oil change service more frequently.

Can I Change My Oil Myself?

If you’d prefer to change your oil in your Brandon garage, you’ll need some supplies from our parts department. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Use a jack stand or ramps to raise your car.
  2. Find the oil drain plug underneath the engine. Place an oil basin directly under the plug.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug and let the oil drain completely. This could take 15 minutes, so make sure all the oil is gone before putting the plug back in place.
  4. Get your new filter and rub some oil around the rubber seat to give a watertight seal.
  5. Place the filter and tighten it by hand.
  6. Remove your oil cap and pour in your new oil. Check the owner’s manual if you need more information about what type of oil is right for your car.
  7.  Put the oil cap back on.
  8. Double-check your oil level by looking at the dipstick. If you’re still low, top off your oil levels. If not, you’re good to go!
